In this chapter, the basic terminologies, definitions, concepts, and theories of sampling from a finite population are presented. Various sampling strategies based on equal and unequal probability sampling designs are also presented. The inferential aspects of sampling, such as design-based, model-based, and model-design-unbiased estimators, are discussed. Optimal sampling strategies under various superpopulation models are identified.
