Social researchers often face enormous problems collecting truthful data relating to socially sensitive issues in human surveys. Warner (Journal of the American Statistical Association 60:63–69, 1965) introduced an ingenious indirect questioning method of data collection known as the randomized response (RR) technique for such human surveys. The proposed RR technique can be used to collect better quality data relating to sensitive subjects as well as boost cooperation from the respondents. This chapter provides a comprehensive chronological review of the early developments of RR techniques or models. Details of the methods for the estimation of parameters from the RR survey data based on the simple random sampling with replacement (SRSWR) method are discussed.
