The Role of Entomopathogenic Fungal Metabolites in Pest Management

The pervasive use of chemical insecticides and pesticides in agriculture has long been a primary strategy for pest management. However, the continuous and widespread application of these harmful agrochemicals has precipitated numerous problems, including the evolution of pest resistance, disruption of ecological balance, and adverse effects on non-target organisms, including crops. In response to these challenges, entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) have emerged as a promising alternative for sustainable pest management. These fungi naturally infect and kill insects, offering a biological control mechanism that reduces reliance on synthetic insecticides. A critical aspect of their efficacy lies in the production of secondary metabolites or toxins, which play a pivotal role in the pathogenic process. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the diverse metabolites produced by various classes of EPF, exploring their mechanisms of action, efficacy in pest management, and potential integration into modern agricultural practices. By elucidating the ecological impacts of these fungal metabolites, we aim to highlight their advantages over traditional pesticides and their potential to enhance integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural systems.
