Reflections on Disaster and Climate Education in the Japanese Education Sector

In aiming for a carbon–neutral society, there is a call for the integration of disaster education and climate education in Japan. While in Japan's educational administration, disaster education and climate education are handled by different departments, their integration is being sought through revisions to the national curriculum guidelines. To achieve practical and effective disaster education tailored to the local disaster risks, efforts are being made in school settings, such as in-service teacher training simulating multi-hazards such as landslides and floods due to heavy rainfall during school hours, and improvements to disaster response manuals. Attempts from the perspective of mitigating damage from climate disasters, not limited to earthquakes and tsunamis, are being observed.
