Metal–Organic Frameworks for Plastic Degradation

Plastic pollution has caused a gigantic increase in the number of plastic synthetic environments to the point that they have started creating difficulties for wildlife and their territories as well as for human population. Recently, initiatives to transform leftover plastic polymers into monomers or value-added goods have increased. This activity is rising in order to create a circular economy in the plastic life cycle. Chemically, degradation of plastic can also be done through hydrolysis, methanolysis, and ammonolysis. Today, catalytic hydrogenolysis has been elaborated on as an interesting methodology to deconstruct plastic. Furthermore, with suitable pore structures, porous materials are now widely used in environmental applications, which also include the degradation of plastic. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are eminent examples of these kinds of porous materials.
