Emerging Water Desalting Technologies: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Trends

The desalination industry stands to benefit from the integration of new technologies that can diversify its current reliance on thermal desalination and reverse osmosis methods. This research focuses on emerging alternatives such as forward osmosis, electrochemical distillation, and membrane distillation. These approaches exhibit technological maturity and scalability. While the integration of nanomaterials has enhanced these novel desalination methods, depending solely on membrane-based techniques is insufficient for the widespread adoption of desalination technologies. For forward osmosis, successful large-scale commercialization hinges on the strategic selection of solutes and the development of energy-efficient methods for recovering the drawing solution. In the context of membrane distillation, leveraging low-grade heat and hybrid systems powered by renewable energy sources holds the key to driving expansion. This study delves into the advancement of process monitoring and control, particularly within the domain of membrane distillation, utilizing innovative in-situ methodologies. These in-situ approaches not only diminish operational expenses associated with grab sampling and continuous membrane replacement but also pave the way for enhanced efficiency. The optimization of technical system design and the financial evaluation of upscaling initiatives should be the top priorities for future research areas. By doing so, we can unlock the full potential of these new desalination technologies and establish them as integral components of a sustainable and diversified water desalination landscape.
