Membrane Desalination of Wastewater for the Contaminant Removal and Reduction of Fouling

Membrane distillation is one of the promising new methods for desalinating water. The air sparged-DCMD (AS-DCMD) was tested using a saltwater solution. When NaCl is utilized as feed, it was shown that the permeate flow in AS-DCMD mode can be up to 10% greater than in standard DCMD. In numerous instances, substantial membrane fouling was seen when these solutions were concentrated using membrane distillation technique. Fouling was mostly brought on by the heating in the feeds and increased solute contents. A process uses fluctuations in vapor pressure to pass water through a microspore membranes while blocking other non-volatile substances that are present in the wastewater. However, reduced fluid costs for manufacturing and increased energy utilization in MD plants continue to be significant technical challenges. In this study, investigated water flux increasing and decreasing unit energy consumption can be achieved by optimizing the MD membranes heat and mass transport properties.
