Solar Energy Integration with an HVDC Modular Converter for HVDC Power Transmission

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission allows higher voltage electric power (such as that produced by solar or wind) to be transported over thousands of kilometers with minimal losses versus high-voltage alternative current (HVAC). It allows solar power to be integrated into the current power grid on a large scale. This paper aims to provide an overview of methods used to integrate HVDC and solar systems. The penetration of renewable energy is examined about bipolar links for HVDC. MATLAB/SIMULINK is used to simulate the different transmission line lengths. Based on simulations, the HVDC system is superior to the HVAC system in terms of power losses and short-circuit levels. Further, the simulation studies are compared with real-time data between the stations Pugalur AC Grid (high solar energy region) and Thrissur AC Grid (low solar energy region). The comparison studies enumerate the need-to-go situation for HVDC technology during the penetration of solar voltaic penetration into the utility network.
