Harnessing Power from a Marine Current Turbine with the Optimum Control Strategy

Electrical energy is a basic need for industrial, commercial, and domestic loads. It has been proven to be the backbone of any country’s economy and the quality of people’s lifestyle. The primary sources of energy are coal, oil, hydroelectricity, and nuclear in limited form. The main concern of these sources is global warming, carbon dioxide, energy security, and the longtime availability of these, so industry and research and development (R&D) efforts for the utilization of energy have been shifted to green, everlasting, and clean blue energy (ocean energy). India has a wide scope of marine energy due to a large coastline area of about 7500 km and about 336 islands in the Arab Sea and Bay of Bengal by improving the capacity of ocean energy able to overcome energy deficiency. The working concept of a marine current turbine is the same as that of a wind turbine situated in the sea. In this paper, a marine current turbine connected with 500 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous generator (PMSG) integrated with 690 V grid systems has been simulated with optimum control. Tip speed ratio (TSR), rotor speed, power coefficient of Marine Current Turbine (MCT), and generated power have been observed.
