Design of Robust Controller for Active Magnetic Bearings Using Terminal Sliding Mode Approach

This paper demonstrates the design of a robust control scheme for active magnetic bearings (AMBs). The AMBs belong to the class of nonlinear dynamical systems with high uncertainty. The primary concern in AMBs is the stabilization and regulation of the position control of the rotor shaft. It is required to levitate the rotor shaft while tracking the set trajectory and to eliminate the external disturbances exclusive of violating the plant constraints. The proposed control scheme has been developed using the terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) approach. The simulation results are obtained to present the tracking response of the AMB. Finally, a comparative analysis has been done to reveal the significant improvement in the performance of AMB with the proposed scheme with the existing controller.
