Evaluation of Rebound Index in Various Sports Ground and Their Improvisation (Using Crumb Rubber)

Traditional outdoor sports grounds often lack favourable properties for players compared to their synthetic counterparts. This study aims to bridge this gap by exploring the feasibility of transforming outdoor grounds to match the performance characteristics of indoor synthetic surfaces, providing a cost-effective alternative for sports facilities. The research focuses on determining Schmidt’s rebound number and bounce characteristics using Schmidt’s rebound hammer and Lightweight deflectometer, respectively. Conducted at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, the experiment involves collecting data on various sports fields, both indoor and outdoor. To align outdoor soil conditions with the attributes of synthetic grounds, shredded tyres will be integrated into sand. The study systematically examines different shredded tyre proportions added to the sand, employing the aforementioned tests to assess the resulting properties. The anticipated outcomes of this research include insights into how shredded tyre-sand mixtures impact outdoor sports ground properties. By quantifying Schmidt’s rebound number and bounce characteristics, we aim to identify the optimal shredded tyre proportions that enhance the playing conditions of conventional outdoor grounds. This study not only contributes to the understanding of soil modification in sports ground management but also proposes a sustainable and economically viable solution for upgrading existing outdoor facilities. The findings may inform future practices in sports ground construction and maintenance, offering a valuable perspective for both researchers and practitioners seeking innovative approaches to enhance player experience and performance.
