Design of Top Surface of a Partly Reusable Sanitary Napkin Based on Fluid Flow Across the Plane

Menstruation, the monthly shedding of the uterine lining, makes women vulnerable to diseases caused by inadequate hygiene. Medical textiles heavily employ disposable menstrual sanitary items, which assist in management of menstrual flow and preserve hygiene. Sanitary napkins, a popular menstrual hygiene product, have three layers: top, inner (including a distribution layer), and bottom, each with different features and uses. The top surface of the napkin directly contacts the skin and absorbs menstrual flow across the plane, leaving the surface dry and comfortable with minimal back flow. Scientific studies have been done to simulate the napkin's partially reusable characteristics. The study examined polyester monofilament and multifilament plain woven top-surfaces of different constructions to understand the intrinsic influence of yarn type, pore size, drop size and horizontal wicking in terms of diameter on fluid flow across the plane and the problem of liquid drop flow through the top surface of sanitary napkins to the core. A mathematical model will be formulated to understand the mechanism of flow. Therefore facilitating selection of an optimal top surface to create a more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and partially recyclable product.
