Potential Applications of Jute and Coir Fibers in Geotextiles: Review

Ligno cellulosic fibers such as jute and coir have been used in varied applications for centuries. Jute fibers are derived from the stem of jute plant, while coir fibers are obtained from coconut husk. Owing to their sustainability and environmental friendliness, these natural geotextiles are attracting attention of scientists and researchers for use in cutting-edge technologies. These fibers possess good tensile, tearing, bursting strength, and UV resistance, which make them suitable for various industrial, geo, and civil engineering applications. Jute and Coir fibers alone or in special combinations have numerous applications in building retaining walls, filtration, drainage, and soil erosion control as well as for manufacturing plant pots &mulch mats, building railway lines, and building highways. Jute and Coir geotextiles have promising applications in the protection of slopes in earthen embankments, hill slopes, garbage dumps, and piles of granular waste like fly ash in thermal power. In this review, various forms of geotextile materials, their market status, characteristics, advantages, and limitations have been discussed with emphasis on potential applications of jute and coir as sustainable alternatives to synthetic geotextiles.
