摘要

Construction over soft soil poses significant engineering challenges due to its low strength, stiffness, and inadequate drainage capabilities. Geosynthetic materials emerge as a superior and cost-effective option for building civil structures on such challenging terrains. While commercial geosynthetic products are traditionally manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), concerns over the environmental impact of polyethylene manufacturing and prolonged use have prompted exploration into alternative materials. Natural fibre geosynthetics have gained traction for various applications, including enhancing the strength and stability of weak soil profiles and mitigating soil erosion. In particular, they prove beneficial in low-budget projects like unpaved roads and erosion control on steep slopes, fostering vegetation growth. Previous research indicates that coir, a natural fibre derived from coconut husks, stands out for its durability owing to its high lignin content and superior tensile strength compared to other natural fibres. This study delves into the potential application of geosynthetic products made from coir fibres, with a primary focus on evaluating the effectiveness of coir geotextile in preventing soil erosion along the Barak River bank. Additionally, the study explores the reinforcement application of coir geocell by observing the behaviour of the reinforced layer under dynamic loading conditions, aiming to enhance the performance of low-volume unpaved roads situated on the soft subgrade. The results of the study indicate that the coir geotextile meets the criteria for permeability, soil retention, and serviceability. Furthermore, the performance of the unpaved road section reinforced with coir geocell surpasses that of the unreinforced section, showcasing its effectiveness in improving stability and durability under dynamic loading conditions.
