Example of Assessing Parenting Capacity for a Parent with Substance Misuse Disorder

This chapter provides a case study where three assessment instruments were used to assess a complex case (Personality Assessment Inventory to assess parental mental health; Parenting Capacity Instrument to identify risk factors for harm to a child; and Impact on child of parental misuse of substances). The case involves a mother who has a substance use disorder, and where a child protection notification has been made. The case study is presented in the form of a report to a lawyer. A finding is made that the child is exposed to a significant risk of cumulative harm, and a recommendation is made to not proceed with reunification.
