Salt Industry in the Philippines: Review on Trends and Technological Intervention

Salt holds undeniable significance in human life, not only enhancing the flavor of our meals but also satiating our culinary desires. In the Philippines, the salt industry stands as a vital economic sector, offering employment to multitudes and facilitating the production of various goods. However, prevailing challenges necessitate early resolution to avert potential shortages. This research paper aims to present an overview of the current state of the Philippine salt industry, encompassing production dynamics and encountered hurdles. Drawing on an insightful body of existing research in the country, the paper adopts a qualitative and observational approach to methodology. Alongside outlining challenges such as heightened competition from imported sources, environmental degradation, and technological deficiencies, the paper explores potential remedies. Proposed solutions encompass strategies like reducing reliance on imported salt, augmenting local production, fostering sustainable harvesting practices, exploring new market avenues, stimulating innovation, and bolstering technological integration. Moreover, the establishment of an R&D center spearheaded by Pangasinan State University emerges as a pivotal initiative in overcoming these obstacles and propelling industry growth.
