Imagining the Trajectories of the 2018 Peace Agreement Between Eritrea and Ethiopia
摘要
In this paper, I outline briefly the background to the 1998–2000 war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, the nearly 20-year long state of no war no peace and the dramatic and sudden end to the conflict in July 2018. I then proceed to interpret the treaty of peace of 9 July 2018 and the statements made by the leaders of both countries. Although the border between the two countries has been virtually closed, the impact of the treaty remains to be strong. I conclude the paper by putting forward the thesis that there is now conducive environment for the construction of new relations that satisfy the interests of both countries.
