Newer Visual Assistive Devices

This chapter explores the critical role of visual assistive devices in enhancing the independence and quality of life for individuals with visual impairments in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite the benefits, barriers such as a lack of awareness among eye care practitioners, social stigma, and the high cost of electronic aids limit their utilization. The chapter highlights the various available assistive technologies, including screen readers, refreshable braille displays, and electronic magnification aids, which improve accessibility in education and employment. It emphasizes the need for increased awareness, training, and policy enhancements to make these devices more accessible and affordable.
