Assistive Technology: Simple and Effective

The World Health Organization (World Report on disability, 2011) defines assistive technology (AT) as “any piece of equipment, product, or tool, whether it is acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities”. Globally, AT is being recognized as an important component of planning rehabilitation interventions for the disabled. Visually impaired (VIs) people can also benefit from ATs for mobility, daily living, reading, and writing while also enhancing their employability. There are a wide range of ATs available, starting from simple, low-cost, large-print books to high-end, expensive refreshable Braille display. Depending on the need, this technology can be used to improve the quality of life of the VIs. Some of these ATs are not age-dependent and can be used by all age groups. The immediate need is to develop a assistive device which has a universal application, independent of the age of the person benefiting from it. A significant push is being made by eye care professionals and caregivers to promote ATs. This chapter discusses the experience gathered in the application of ATs in the educational programmes of the Model School for the Blind at the NIEPVD, Dehradun, and highlights the need for developing low-cost and innovative assistive devices that are easy to use, have a higher degree of acceptability amongst the school children, and can be easily replicated in other institutions.
