Biocompatibility and Toxicity of Graphene Quantum Dots

GQDs offer a lot of potential for biological imaging because of their intense visible photoluminescence. GQDs have several benefits over conventional organic photosensitizers, such as chemical inertness, high water solubility, photostability, the interaction between optoelectronic features and shape/size, good donors in the fluorescence resonance energy transfer process, high stability in physiological conditions, specific accumulation at the target site, and straightforward surface functionalization. GQDs are prospective candidates for cutting-edge delivery systems for target-specific photosensitization because of their PL properties, quantum confinement, and edge effects. To compare the rates of toxicity and biocompatibility of various GQDs and their composites prepared using various synthesis and processing techniques, refer to this chapter.
