Industrial control systems (ICS) are critical in correctly and efficiently operating various industrial facilities, including petrochemical plants, refineries, wastewater plants, and production and manufacturing facilities. As critical components of the operational technology system of smart factories, ICS are connected to IT networks or the Internet and are often targeted by cyberattacks that exploit different vulnerabilities and breaches. Also, the attacks might come from inside the company if the attacker gets physical access to the control infrastructure. This paper focuses on analyzing the potential impact of cyberattacks on the field equipment level of hierarchical industrial control systems. A traditional automatic level control system for water accumulation is simulated, along with various attack scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that cyberattacks on ICS can cause temporary service interruptions or incorrect system operation and physical damage to industrial infrastructure components, increasing their wear in a short period.
