Patients on CAR T Cell Therapy

Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR T)-cell therapy has revolutionized cancer treatment, offering hope for patients with hematologic malignancies. By harnessing the patient’s immune system, CAR T cells can effectively target and eliminate cancer cells. Despite impressive response rates and long-term remissions, the therapy comes with challenges such as cytokine release syndrome, neurologic toxicities, and disease relapse that can occur even after CAR T therapy. Moreover, the high cost of treatment and limited accessibility are presently the areas of concern. With continued advancements, CAR T-cell therapy holds the promise of transforming cancer into a more manageable and treatable condition for many patients. This chapter intends to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of action of CAR T, its adverse events, and their management, along with insights on the development of CARs.
