Organizational Sustainability Performance in Public and Private Sectors: Review of Definitions, Main Aspects, and Challenges

In recent years, the importance of sustainability has grown significantly, compelling organizations to integrate it into their operations. This chapter reviews 57 papers from eight disciplines published between 1997 and 2023 on organizational sustainability performance (OSP) in the public and private sectors. The content analysis led us to identify five major themes: definitions of OSP and related terms, factors impacting OSP, the relationship between sustainability performance and financial performance, sustainability performance evaluation and challenges. In addition, a comparison between public and private sectors has been conducted. Finally, the chapter provides recommendations to improve future implementation.
