Production of Value-Added Products Using Microalgae: A Zero-Waste Biorefinery Approach
摘要
Over the past decade, the harmful environmental repercussions of the overuse of fossil-based sources concomitant with the socioeconomic awareness have led to recent interests in renewable biomass-based industrial products. The emergence of integrated zero-waste algal biorefinery concepts has intensified the exploration of diversified intracellular biochemical constituents to a myriad of products. In the context of the above-mentioned trend, the present chapter summarizes comprehensively the algal intrinsic composition and its capacity to form a diversified range of value-added products. Different algal cultivation techniques have been delineated. The extraction strategies for different products have been comprehensively summarized. To facilitate effective translation of applied research to an industrial scale, an overview of the enviroeconomic feasibility aspects has been highlighted. The recommendations made would act as a baseline guiding future research and algal biorefinery-based sustainable technology transition.
