The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Despite extensive research, the precise pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains incompletely understood, necessitating further investigations. Additionally, the treatment of IBD poses constant challenges, including adverse drug reactions, drug resistance, etc. In recent years, mounting evidence has demonstrated the potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) for cell-free therapy in preclinical models of IBD. EVs have garnered significant research interest as an emerging therapeutic strategy. Consequently, an increasing number of studies have uncovered the role and mechanism of exosomes derived from various sources, which will greatly promote the research of IBD. This article aims to comprehensively review the therapeutic and pathogenic effects of EVs on IBD considering the diverse components of EVs originating from different sources.
