The face is composed of five layers that share similarities with the scalp, although they differ in muscle development, especially in the fifth layer. These layers include the skin, subcutaneous fat, the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System), deep fat or spaces, and the periosteum or deep fascia. Each region of the face, scalp, and temporal areas has slight variations in these layers. The SMAS layer is particularly important in facial anatomy and surgery, playing a vital role in facial lifting procedures as it is interconnected with blood vessels, nerves, and retaining ligaments. These retaining ligaments are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and stability of the face, as they anchor the facial soft tissues to the underlying bone. Facial fat is categorized into superficial and deep layers, with the distribution and positioning of these fat compartments being essential for understanding facial aging and the effects of surgical interventions.
