Biosensors for Rapid and Early Detection of Chronic Diseases

Detecting chronic diseases at an early stage is a crucial task during this era of the pandemic. Biomarker screening is the sole standard screening protocol used to aid in the diagnosis of chronic diseases. The existing advanced technologies in the market do not provide a satisfactory solution for medical diagnosis, thus creating a desirable requirement for identifying biomarkers. On the other hand, the use of sensitive biosensing strategies is beneficial in the clinical detection of biomarkers for chronic diseases. This chapter focuses on choosing new, cost-effective biosensor technologies that can detect biomarkers related to different diseases. Recent advancements in portable biosensors enable swift, precise, and on-location identification of biomarkers, thereby aiding in the prevention of disease transmission. In clinical settings, biosensors are primarily developed to detect biomarkers and assess the efficacy of drugs at specific locations, thereby minimizing potential harm to other tissues. Simultaneous identification of multiple biomarkers would enable early stage diagnosis and prompt intervention within the critical time window. The objective of this chapter is to present up-to-date information on advanced biosensing strategies that utilize nanomaterials to detect important biomarkers associated with diseases such as cardiac, diabetic, and inflammatory conditions.
