Recent Advances on the Development of Additive Manufactured Biodegradable Implants

The integration of additive manufacturing method to biomedical field has emerged to provide alternate solutions by providing personalized and precise health-care devices. This chapter explores various layered manufacturing processes, their working principles, and potential applications in the field of biomedical engineering. The chapter is mainly focused on the fabrication of biodegradable implants for various organ defects. It highlights the range of materials from bioresorbable polymer to metal and composite used in fabricating biodegradable implants using additive manufacturing. Biodegradable implants such as bone implant, hip implant, vascular implant, dental implants are highlighted. Lastly, the chapter concludes with a comprehensive summary including the challenges, and prospective research areas in this field to be investigated. Overall, this chapter will provide comprehensive information to researchers and health-care professionals regarding the current status, advance scenario and future direction of additive manufactured biodegradable implants.
