The field of biomaterials science has undergone a remarkable transformation, driven by collaborative efforts between materials scientists, biologists, engineers, and clinicians. This book chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in biomaterials, emphasizing their pivotal role in modern medicine. It commences with an exploration of the significance of biomaterials in various medical contexts, showcasing their critical contributions to regenerative medicine, drug delivery, prosthetics, and tissue engineering. Additionally, the chapter delves into the synthesis of biomaterials, covering conventional methods, advanced nanofabrication techniques, and biomimetic approaches, highlighting their relevance in tailoring materials for specific applications. A significant focus is fixed on tailored nanomaterials for drug delivery with an in-depth examination of nanoparticles and nanocarriers for nucleic acid delivery. Targeted delivery strategies are elucidated, encompassing surface functionalization techniques and stimuli-responsive materials, which enhance precision and efficiency in drug delivery systems. This chapter explores biomimetic coatings and surface modifications, showcasing their proficiency in mimicking extracellular matrix architecture and incorporating bioactive molecules.
