Avenues for Bio-3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing in Veterinary Surgical Procedures

Animal injuries are attracting interest in implant and prosthetic fabrication by additive manufacturing. Different species of animals sustain different types of injuries due to their surrounding habitat, body structure and weight, and style of living. The injuries in each species are commonly similar, but every affected limb has a different form and shape, which needs customized limb fabrication. Bio-additive manufacturing (bio-AM) has drastically simplified this task because of the interoperability between medical imaging and 3D printing file formats. This text has compiled the data of injury in specific anatomical parts of limbs in common species. The materials and biomaterials available for bio-additive manufacturing of common limb tissues have also been highlighted, and additive manufacturing technologies suitable for 3D printing of limb tissue scaffolds and prosthetics have been described. This chapter provides a single window of information for common veterinary professionals in the common species specialization domain to get one stop information for biomaterial selections, AM process selection, and overall progress of the AM to animal health care.
