摘要

Polymeric and other composite materials represent a significant resource in the search for advanced thermal insulating materials. The current chapter explores more specifically the types, availability of resources for polymeric composite, and their inherent properties conducive to thermal insulation, and innovative conversion technologies that transform them into valuable thermal insulating materials. Beginning with an overview of the abundance and sustainability of polymeric resources including organic, inorganic thermal insulators, nanomaterial, aerogels, and agricultural waste materials are briefly addressed. The discussion extends to the diverse range of composites available and their specific thermal insulation capabilities. Various conversion technologies, including extrusion, injection molding, and advanced additive manufacturing techniques, which are pivotal in enhancing the thermal properties of these materials are discussed. The optimization of manufacturing processes, effect of pore orientation, size, and density of polymeric composites to achieve desired thermal conductivity, durability, and environmental sustainability are emphasized. Case studies and examples highlight successful applications of polymeric and composite materials in thermal insulation across industries such as construction, automotive, and aerospace. Furthermore, the economic implications of utilizing these materials for thermal insulation are examined, demonstrating their potential to create wealth through energy savings and extended product lifespans. It covers the outlook on future research directions and emerging trends, including the integration of recycled and bio-based materials. The future direction for enhancement of the efficiency and sustainability of thermal insulating materials derived from polymeric and composite resources are also included.
