Digital Transition in Healthcare in Morocco: Current Progress and Challenges to Overcome

The Moroccan healthcare system has undergone significant advancements aimed at ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of citizens by providing high-quality services that are uniformly accessible across the entire national territory and financially affordable. Despite progress made over the past two decades, the healthcare sector in Morocco faces new challenges. The widespread implementation of basic medical coverage will significantly strain existing human and material resources, especially given the revelations brought forth by the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizing the need to adopt digital transformation as a realistic alternative for a resilient healthcare system. In response to these imperatives, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection integrated e-health into its sectoral strategies as early as 2008. This digital transformation aligns with Morocco's commitment to play a major role in digital advancements in Africa. Various strategies, such as “e-Maroc 2010”, “Maroc numérique 2013”, “Maroc Digital 2020”, and “Horizon 2025”, have paved the way to position Morocco as a leading digital destination on the international stage. The “MoroccoTech” initiative, launched by the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, aims to create a comprehensive momentum conducive to digital transition, naturally encompassing the healthcare sector. The adoption of e-health, as a promising future domain for the national healthcare system, will enable Morocco to establish a personalized and secure healthcare system, more focused on prevention and prediction.
