Design and Development of Automated Office Work Desk with Control for Vertical Height and Horizontal Alignment

Professional work in present days demands for being seated for longer duration at a place in the office, and it leads to various health problems such as back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain. As per the literature survey, different techniques for height adjustment of the work tables have been introduced by addressing the problems. However, the techniques reported till date are either with manual height adjustment of a table or with the use of electronics and pneumatics. Hence, discovering the research gap, this paper presents design and development of an automated office work desk with control for vertical height and horizontal alignment. The desk is designed using SolidWorks design software. Structural analysis is performed to determine deformation and stress using ANSYS analysis software. The desk is fabricated using GI material. A linear actuator is used for providing vertical traverse motion, and the control signals are provided using gesture sensor for vertical height adjustment and encoder-driven control for horizontal alignment. The control programming is done using Arduino microcontroller. Experiments are performed on the developed office work desk for speed measurement during vertical traverse, and the results are compared with the theoretical values.
