Mapping of Emerging Biotechnological Advancement in Textile and Apparel: A Sustainable Approach Towards Circular Economy and Life Cycle Assessment

The explosion of fast fashion trends amongst the consumer has led to a massive expansion of the textile industry. Excessive complexities generated by textile waste have become a global challenge and thus highlight the need for a scientific, sustainable, eco-friendly, and a cost approach to minimize its toxicological impact on environmental health. The current chapter delivers a wide range of strategic innovations highlighting the following key objectives: (i) to provide an overview of the detrimental changes caused by the wastes generated from textile industries along with the most feasible and sustainable recycling approaches (ii) to provide an overview of current developments utilizing combined biotechnology cutting-edge approaches for strategic management of textile effluents. Studies on integrated nano-based models, genetic engineering infused microbial mediated technologies, and artificial intelligence-based remediation approaches are critically reviewed and emphasized in this chapter (iii) to comprehensively discuss the life cycle analysis (LCA) models with a boundary of the cradle-to-gate system in response to global environmental impact, its challenges on global warming, abiotic depletion, acidification and eutrophication potential (iv) to provide a global perspective on the identification of green innovation and circular economy practices with incorporation of critical design thinking in possible development of new products via innovative and circular solutions. Thus, this chapter delivers a snapshot of the prevailing landscape on the principal hindrances, conceivable opportunities, and untapped economic potential of textile waste management to construct a sustainable environment for the future.
