Issues of Women’s Art and Women Artists

The problems faced by female artists in the field of contemporary art in China are different from the “feminism” emphasized in Western society, and many female artists have participated in group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. In the 1990s, critics began to discuss the issues of female artists, emphasizing that the salient feature of women’s art at that time was “detachment from male discourse and a shift to the search for self-worth.” Although some female critics have highlighted issues such as “power,” most female artists do not see their art as related to “feminist” issues. It is a common attitude among female artists to engage in individual artistic creation based on their own experience and intellectual background.
