Introduction

Membrane computing is a class of distributed parallel computing models inspired by biological cell mechanisms. Spiking neural P systems are neural-like membrane computing models and can be seen as the intersection of membrane computing and artificial neural networks. This chapter first introduces their background and then briefly reviews the current status of membrane computing. Moreover, research progress of spiking neural P systems is introduced in detail. Finally, the chapter organization of this book is explained.
