Urban Growth and Land Use Change Impacts on Climate Change in Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is faced with the challenge of climate change posed in part by urban growth and unsustainable land use change. This chapter presents a comprehensive review of the interrelationships between urban growth, climate change, and land use/land cover transformations. As urban areas continue to expand rapidly, this review aims to analyse the effect of urban growth and changes in land use on the climate system. By synthesizing findings from diverse scientific disciplines such as urban planning, environmental science, geography, and climate sciences, this article offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics that shape contemporary urban environments and their impacts on global climate change and highlights the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and land management strategies to mitigate and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change in the region.
