Enhancing Soil Health in Brazilian Agroecosystems: Indicators and Management Practices

Soil health is vital for sustaining life on Earth, supporting food production, nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and biodiversity. The understanding of soil health has evolved from focusing solely on crop productivity to a holistic concept encompassing environmental and human health aspects. Thus, aligning with broader sustainability goals to address global challenges like food insecurity and climate change. This chapter discusses Brazilian soil health within major agroecosystems. Brazil has been a significant contributor to the scientific discourse on soil health. Currently, the country also ranks fourth in the global scientific publications in this field. However, some of these publications use the term “soil health” generically, lacking a comprehensive understanding of the concept. Biological processes play a pivotal role in maintaining healthy soils, with biological-based metrics emerging as promising indicators of soil health because they reflect the chemical and physical conditions of the soils. Biological-based metrics that quantify the abundance of the whole community or the population of specific groups (e.g., microbial biomass, the abundance of bacteria and archaea, fungi and functional genes), the relative abundance (e.g., community composition and diversity), and process rates related to critical biogeochemical cycles (potential C and N mineralization rates as well as enzymatic activity) offer valuable insights into soil health. However, interpreting these indicators requires careful consideration of multiple factors and context-specific understanding. Sustainable agricultural practices such as no-tillage, cover cropping, and crop-livestock integration have been contributing to the recovery, sustenance, and/or enhancement of soil health across the country. Diversification with multiple harvest seasons and cover crops can enhance the provision of critical ecosystem services, but their impact on food production varies. Thus, balancing soil health and the yield of cash crops is crucial to encourage adopting practices that benefit soil health without compromising farmers’ income. Understanding the impact of different management practices on soil health indicators in Brazilian agroecosystems with a focus on the recent advances in biological-based metrics, while considering crop yields, is essential for promoting more sustainable agriculture and healthier soils. The dynamic nature of soil health emphasizes the need for ongoing research to continuously improve soil management practices and deepen our understanding of the mechanisms linking the soil health indicators with the biogeochemical processes driving the ecosystem services of interest. In conclusion, enhancing soil health in Brazilian agroecosystems is crucial for sustainable agriculture and environmental well-being. By embracing practices that support soil health and employing reliable indicators, farmers and policymakers can foster healthier soils while ensuring food security.
