In the context of twenty-first-century challenges, a significant concern pertains to the ever-growing population and its need for food. This entails an increase in crop production by 50% to feed the projected global population of 9 billion by the year 2050. However, intensive agricultural practices, including monocropping, tillage, and excessive use of fertilisers and herbicides have been a major contributor to land degradation and several environmental issues. The adoption of conservation farming practices has gained prominence in various regions across the globe as a response to the pressing need to combat land degradation while simultaneously contributing to food security and climate change adaptation. The few centimetres of topsoil serve as the bedrock upon which all civilisations rely, therefore, soil conservation is considered a critical aspect of sustainable land management, essential for preventing erosion, preserving soil health, and maintaining agricultural productivity. This chapter delves into various approaches, tools, and techniques employed in soil conservation. This work investigates both traditional and innovative methods, aiming to offer comprehensive insights into their effectiveness, limitations, and applicability across different environmental contexts. Soil conservation practices encompass conservation tillage, the adoption of mixed crop rotations, and the implementation of measures to increase and retain crop residues, all aimed at enhancing soil carbon sequestration and the associated co-benefits. These include improvement of soil structure, enhancement of nutrient cycling, increase in soil biological activity and diversity, preservation of water resources, and reduction of CO2 emissions. The use of erosion control structures and bioengineering techniques based on plant materials contribute also to mitigate the adverse effects of soil erosion along with fostering biodiversity and sustainability. Nonetheless, soil conservation practices must be tailored to fit pedo-climatic conditions, crop species, farmers’ socio-economic conditions, and technological advancement. Furthermore, diversification and combination of different soil conservation techniques and tools together with the use of the latest technologies such as GIS, remote sensing, and precision agriculture are required to effectively manage soil resources across scales. While economic constraints, knowledge gaps, and resistance to change may hinder the widespread adoption of soil conservation practices, strategies such as increased education, financial incentives, supportive policies, community cooperation, and advanced technologies can help overcome these barriers and promote sustainable soil management. By analyzing the latest research and case studies, this chapter seeks to provide a valuable resource for policymakers, land managers, and researchers to make informed decisions in promoting soil conservation and ensuring the future viability of our ecosystems.
