Navigating the Challenges of Antibiotic Resistance: Origins, Mechanisms, and Global Responses

Antibiotic resistance is a global health issue, which undermines the efficacy of antibiotics and poses a challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. This abstract provides a brief overview of the origins, mechanisms, and evolution of antibiotic resistance as well as its multidimensional contributors, along with a snippet of information on strategies for its alleviation. The rise in antibiotic resistance is attributed to the rise and spread of antibiotic-resistant strains, mainly due to the selective pressure exerted by global antibiotic misuse. Furthermore, other mechanisms like horizontal gene transfer, mutations, and the presence of as environmental hotspots of resistance genes also contribute to the spread of resistance. The primary causes for the spread of antibiotic resistance include overprescription of antibiotics, lack of surveillance tools in healthcare systems, inadequacies in infection control practices, and antibiotic use in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. Moreover, the fact that the pipeline for new antibiotics is practically dry further limits the available treatment options for multidrug-resistant infections. A multifaceted approach is needed for combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which encompasses meticulous antibiotic stewardship, a dedicated infection control team, and one healthcare approach with an emphasis on reducing environmental misuse of antibiotics. Collaboration among healthcare providers, policymakers, researchers, and the public is essential to combatting antibiotic resistance and preserving the efficacy of antibiotics for future generations. Hence, it can be concluded that addressing antibiotic resistance requires focused global action and a commitment to sustainable practices, to safeguard public health.
