Phage Therapy Reimagined: Viral Solutions for Antibiotic Resistant Challenges

The rise of multi-drug resistant bacterial infections is a major public health concern and presents a significant challenge for the management of the deadliest diseases due to the low effectiveness of commercially available antibiotics which demands the development of novel therapeutic methods. Phage therapy, utilizing Bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) that selectively target and eradicate multi-drug resistant bacteria without harming eukaryotic cells becomes an effective alternative or adjunct to traditional antibiotics. In contrast to antibiotics, Bacteriophages are host specific and they have no effect on beneficial bacteria. Furthermore, it is difficult for the bacterium to acquire resistance to Bacteriophages because they can evolve alongside the host. The worldwide increase in multi-drug resistance (MDR) has rekindled phage therapy as a potential treatment for diseases that conventional antibiotics are unable to treat. Phages are versatile and natural particles that can be engineered or utilized for their lytic enzymes in industrial and medical settings. Phage therapy acts as a targeted approach wherein Bacteriophages infect and eliminate particular pathogenic bacteria with the ability to spread and treat illnesses throughout the body. Importantly, phages multiply in the presence of bacterial targets and have no adverse effects on non-target bacteria or tissues in the body. They also demonstrate rapid bacterial death, often within minutes after infection. This novel technique offers a potentially effective way to face the critical global challenge of fighting infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.
