Addressing the escalating challenges of antibiotic resistance, stemming from the excessive usage and production of antibiotics, prompts a shift towards alternative non-antibiotic treatment. In the ongoing battle against microbial infections, the identification of chemical antibiotics emerged as a formidable tool between the 1920s and 1940s. Excessive use and misuse of antibiotics have spurred mutations, rapidly reduced antibiotic susceptibility and ultimately contributing to antibiotic resistance. However, the abrupt acceleration of antibiotic resistance, a natural occurrence, has raised concerns among healthcare professionals, microbiologists, clinicians, and pharmaceutical researchers globally. The continuous microbial mutations and inevitable horizontal gene transfer underscore the need to reassess strategies against drug-resistant infections. The potential reduction in effectiveness of traditional antibiotic therapies prompts exploration of alternative approaches, such as non-antibiotic therapies, to address challenges posed by drug-resistant microbes. Phage therapy (PT) has resurfaced as a promising domain for delivering patient care against both pathogenic and drug-resistant microbial infections with enhanced reliability. Researchers are diligently committed to contributing to the development and advancement of this antibiotic alternative. It is suitable for both primary treatment and as an adjuvant therapy alongside antimicrobial agents, providing standard care to patients and offering undoubted potential in combating microbial infections effectively.The primary findings emphasize the detrimental impact of antibiotic misuse, demonstrating a swift escalation of antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, the resurgence of phage therapy is highlighted as an evident alternate of antibiotics, with ongoing global initiatives aimed at establishing its clinical safety and efficacy against opportunistic pathogens and antibiotic-resistant microbial infections, positioning phage therapy as a potential avenue for personalized therapeutic interventions.
