The Rise of Antibiotic Resistance: A Global Threat, Origin, and Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance: Current Scenario and Future Prospective

The worldwide health issue of antibiotic resistance has become a serious threat to public health, having a substantial impact on medical care, healthcare systems, and socioeconomic stability. Antibacterial resistance is becoming more prevalent in both developed and developing countries and as a result, it is necessary to determine both the cause of the increase and its treatment. In antibiotic resistance, bacteria become resistant to the drugs intended to kill them through natural selection, where bacteria mutate their genetic sequence, enhance the use of existing medications, as well as for the design of new drugs less susceptible to resistance development, and novel strategies to combat resistance and develop ways to survive antibiotic treatment. Although the passage of genes and bacteria is restricted by several obstacles, pathogens constantly pick up new resistance factors from other species, limiting our ability to prevent and treat bacterial infections. If the issue of antibiotic resistance continues to grow, then infection will become more difficult to treat and raise the possibility of complications and death. Evolutionary events that lead to the generation of novel resistance factors in pathogens are uncommon and challenging to anticipate, but they may have massive repercussions. In this book, we explore recent developments in the origin and evolution of antibiotic resistance, highlighting the current scenario and prospects as well as mechanisms underlying the development of resistance in bacteria, including genetic mutations and horizontal gene transfer. Furthermore, we discuss the contributing factors such as inappropriate antibiotic use, overuse of antibiotics, how resistance genes contribute to the biology of the host, new structural details of relevant molecular events, and the identification of novel resistance gene families and the ways in which they interact. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics are the main causes of the development of drug-resistant. Finally, we explore how we could apply this knowledge to create next-generation medicine that could tackle antibiotic resistance problems. The escalating prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens poses challenges in the management of infectious diseases, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Addressing antibiotic resistance requires a multifaceted approach enhanced surveillance, stewardship programs, novel drug discovery, and alternative treatment strategies. By understanding the complexities of antibiotic resistance and implementing concerted efforts globally, we can mitigate its impact and safeguard the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.
