A Journey Beyond Resistance: Discovering the Promise of Non-Antibiotic Therapies

For decades, numerous studies have demonstrated the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the limits of traditional antibiotics; in the realm of modern medicine, a quiet revolution is underway, reshaping the landscape of infection treatment: the rise of non-antibiotic advanced (NAA) therapies. These innovative approaches, driven by scientific curiosity, offer a glimpse of a future in which infections are fought with precision and effectiveness. The NAA therapies represent a variety of strategies for fighting microbial infections and investigating the mechanisms of AMR in eukaryotic organisms. To understand the intricacies of NAA therapies, it is important to consider their effectiveness, safety profile, cost effectiveness, and interactions with microbial communities. This chapter provides more information about using NAA therapies, including different modalities, AMR peptides and probiotics, phytochemicals and plant-derived compounds, and CRISPR-Cas system. These NAA therapies offer promising new ways to treat infections and reduce the selective pressure of AMR. Furthermore, this article defines the multidisciplinary nature of non-antibiotic therapies and their regulation, viz., the use of various methods of clinical practices along with the evaluation process. Therefore, with their potential to sidestep the looming specter of antimicrobial resistance, these therapies stand as sentinels of hope, ushering in a new era of infection management rooted in resilience and adaptability. Eventually, this will boost the future infectious disease management paradigm.
