Engineering Exchanges: Knowledge Sharing for Social Justice

This chapter highlights the significance of participating in international exchanges within the emerging field of ‘engineering and social justice’. It underscores the value of collaborating with binational nonprofits to support vulnerable communities by applying engineering knowledge to address complex social systems and foster sustainable impact. Knowledge exchange is pivotal for advancing any field, fostering innovation, and promoting diversity and cultural understanding. Drawing from experiences in utilising engineering tools to address complex community issues, the paper showcases methodologies like the Complexity Funnel Methodology (CFM) and Social Transformation Workshops (STWs), developed as part of the author’s PhD thesis. These methodologies, grounded in critical systems theory, systems thinking, and systems dynamics, exemplify how engineering can effectively contribute to improving lives and solving complex social problems. Furthermore, the chapter advocates for a broader perspective that transcends traditional boundaries of the engineering field, emphasising the relevance of international exchanges across various disciplines, not limited to engineering alone.
