Habitat Degradation in Coral Reef Ecosystems and Mangroves: Current Status and Management Measures

Marine ecosystems exhibit vast biodiversity and fulfil critical roles in supporting diverse species. Despite their distinct characteristics, these ecosystems are interconnected, as the health of one can significantly affect others. This interdependence underscores the importance of ecosystem-level conservation strategies to safeguard marine biodiversity and ecosystem services. Coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems are facing severe habitat degradation due to human activities and climate change impacts. As climate change impacts intensify, they can amplify the effects of existing stressors, necessitating the development of new or modified management approaches. This chapter explores the diversity of coral and mangrove ecosystems in India, major threats faced and various mitigation measures employed to address this degradation and promote ecosystem resilience. Protection strategies such as marine protected areas (MPAs) and zoning regulations have been effective in managing human activities and conserving critical habitats. Restoration efforts involving coral gardening, artificial reef deployment, and mangrove rehabilitation have shown promise in rebuilding degraded habitats. Additionally, community engagement and education programmes play a vital role in fostering local stewardship and reducing unsustainable practices. Innovative approaches, including nature-based solutions and sustainable tourism initiatives, are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance ecosystem health and support biodiversity. Despite challenges, collaborative efforts involving governments, NGOs, scientists, and local communities offer hope for the long-term conservation of these vital coastal ecosystems. This chapter underscores the importance of proactive measures to combat habitat degradation and underscores the urgency of global action to protect coral reefs and mangroves for future generations.
