摘要

Genetic variation is fundamental to biodiversity, and crucial for long-term survival and ecological resilience of any living species or population. Understanding genetic diversity at molecular levels aids in ecological comprehension and practical applications, particularly in fisheries management, aquaculture, and conservation. This chapter describes genetic variation, mechanisms (mutations, recombination, and genetic drift), and their impact on fish populations’ adaptability to environmental changes. It delves into genetic variation factors, such as natural selection, gene flow, and population demographics. Furthermore, the implications of low genetic variability, susceptibility to environmental stressors and reduced fitness, are discussed. Various tools to assess genetic variation, ranging from morphological assessments to molecular markers (protein, nuclear, and mitochondrial) are detailed. Various prioritized fish species, across the globe, have been characterized for genetic divergence using these marker systems. Such genetic data has applications in multiple ways. Future perspectives emphasize the potential of genomics in revolutionizing genetic improvement and sustainable practices. This comprehensive understanding of genetic variation and its applications underscores its significance in maintaining healthy, resilient fish populations and overall aquaculture development.
