Surgical Trends in Hip and Knee Osteonecrosis: A Decade of Progress and Age-Related Insights (2010–2020)

Osteonecrosis is a disease affecting the femoral head and knee, with varying incidence rates depending on the joint involved [1–3]. In the United States, approximately 10–20,000 new cases of femoral head osteonecrosis occur annually, while knee osteonecrosis is less common, with an estimated incidence rate of 1–17 cases per 100,000 people per year [4–7]. Understanding surgical management trends is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes and effectively allocating resources [8–10]. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of these trends in the United States from 2010 to 2020, focusing on operative procedures, joint-preserving techniques, and age-related disparities. The data presented originate from one large, national, all-payer database (PearlDiver, Colorado Springs, Colorado), covering surgical trends between 2010 and 2020 [11, 12].
