Promotion of Multipurpose Tree Species Cultivation for Improving Livelihood Security in Drought-Vulnerable Ecosystems

This chapter provides a comprehensive assessment of the long-term efficacy of tree management in minimising the repercussions of drought, It highlights the relative worth of tree species through a suitable selection procedure and establishes strategies to ensure livelihood security in drought-vulnerable ecosystems. Multipurpose trees (MPTs) are vital components for managing the entire farming systems. Trees with multiple purposes enhance economic resiliency by increasing yields, diversifying produce and improving farm capability and sustainability in the long term. Plantation of MPTs, fulfilled number of needs (viz., food, fuelwood, fibre, fertilizer, NTFP, timber) and functions. Drought-prone lands have a low potential for output as the soils are in poor nutritive position, lack any structure and have a sandy texture with low water-holding capacity. Promoting the cultivation of MPTs can boost livelihood in ecosystems sensitive to drought because of adaptable and high-yielding cultivars and improved cultural practices. The production of multiple crops has become the farmers’ choice in India as it ensures financial security. Agroforestry incorporating MPTs, along with low-moisture-requiring agricultural crops, is highly suitable for restoring drought-vulnerable sites.
