This chapter explores the impact of traditional land management practices on soil fertility and crop productivity, supporting their integration into modern agriculture for sustainability. It emphasizes the crucial role of land management in maintaining soil health and agricultural output while addressing challenges like soil erosion and fertility loss. In traditional land management, farmers’ testimony proves the effectiveness of mechanical and agronomic interventions for soil conservation and fertility improvement over time. These strategies encompass a range of methods, from mechanical practices such as contour bunding, terracing, and strategic placement of grass strips and gully control structures to various agronomic approaches, including organic farming, improving fallow and cropping phases in shifting cultivation and various agroforestry models. Organic and natural farming, which emphasize minimal soil disturbance, the use of organic inputs like compost and manure, and the avoidance of synthetic chemicals, draw parallels with traditional practices.
